MMR Design Update
Seattle, WA - Last week, Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) announced updates to their standard Micro-Modular Reactor™ (MMR®) design (USNC Boosts MMR Power, Flexibility, and Value).
These updates will be part of Global First Power’s (GFP) commercial demonstration project at the Chalk River Laboratories. The key change to the design is a new fuel geometry for USNC’s patented Fully Ceramic Microencapsulated (FCM) fuel, increasing MMR output flexibility. The MMR can now operate at various power levels from 10 MWt (3.3MWe) to 45 MWt (15 MWe).
GFP continues to progress the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Chalk River Project, and the MMR’s updated design will be reflected in its initial EIS submission to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), expected in the near future. GFP continues to engage with Indigenous Nations and communities and the broader public as it prepares the EIS material and looks forward to continuing this work through the CNSC’s public consultation process.
GFP values engagement with its communities and key stakeholders, and is engaging in meaningful discussions with all parties to ensure this project delivers value for all.
